Brief Gender Mixup

Toby writes:

In the OR ("operating room" for the acronym-challenged like myself), the doctor had just pulled Kamden out of mommy's tummy and the nurse had held Kamden up for Eroica and I to see. I had heard the word "boy" bandied about several times, but was too busy snapping crucial pictures that Eroica wanted to check for myself during the few seconds the nurse had displayed Kamden for us.

So my heart skipped a beat when the anesthesiologist said, "Wait a second. It's a boy, right?" A nurse replied, "I thought I heard 'girl'." I leaned over and saw that the nurse had written "girl" up on a whiteboard. Luckily the doctor injected, "Boy, boy, boy!" to set the record straight, and Eroica confirmed that she was pretty sure that she saw boy parts. My pulse was able to recede to normal levels.

Now I'm not saying I wouldn't have loved a girl just as much; I'm just saying that we had already picked out a boy name (and hadn't picked out a girl name), we already bought and received boy clothes and toys, and had convinced ourselves that one of each was just about right.

One more quick note on the incident, to stick up for my boy (literally). Kamden, it was not your fault the nurse made the mistake. It was solely a hearing error on her part, and in no way does it reflect on your manhood. Just wanted to be clear on that point.
